BBC dominates O2 Media Awards Yorkshire

Yorkshire Post leads field in print categories

BBC broadcast journalists working across Yorkshire and The Humber have achieved a record number of nominations in this year’s O2 Media Awards.

The broadcaster features in 16 of this year’s 24 categories.

It’s the highest number of nominations achieved by the BBC since the awards began in Yorkshire and The Humber nine years ago.

Leading the BBC charge are news presenters Peter Levy of Look North East Yorkshire and Lincolnshire and Look North colleague Amy Garcia.

Hull-based BBC reporter and presenter Caroline Bilton’s investigations in child abuse see her nominated as 2017’s best TV Journalist. Bilton’s husband and BBC cameraman Joe Bilton is also highlighted in the Best Images category.

In the print categories The Yorkshire Post dominates the finalists’ line up. The Hull Daily Mail wins eight nominations with a double citation for the paper’s award-wnning scribe Kevin Shoesmith.

In radio BBC Radio Leeds scoops the other regional stations with six finalists, one ahead of BBC Radio Sheffield.

ITV Calendar has four nominations including one for outstanding journalism, while Made In Leeds, the city-based TV operator, picks up five nominations – including two for one of the the station’s newest presenters, Kerry Maule.

Nominations for best TV programme include BBC Tom’s Ingall’s thrilling documentary on a steam train’s attempt to break a speed record; True North’s documentary investigating the mystery of a man found dead on Saddleworth Moor and the BBCs coverage of Hull’s City of Culture status.

“These awards grow from strength to strength both in terms of diversity and quality. The entries demonstrate how Yorkshire remains home to some fantastic media talent and is also producing the media stars of the future. The judges had a marathon task and had some very difficult decisions to select overall winners from a brilliant line-up of finalists. All of this year’s entries were strong and those who are nominated should feel extremely proud of their achievements,” said Nicola Green, Director of Corporate Affairs at O2.

The presentation evening will take place at Aspire in Leeds city centre on September 28. Nominees should contact Liz@rossitermedia.co.uk to discuss ticket allocation.

The Yorkshire O2 Media Awards are part of a series of regional media contests across the North. Judging for the North West regional awards will take place in August and September.
