Happy first birthday, Cornerstone!
Just over 12 months ago a small team of ten met to put the wheels in motion for one of the most significant changes the telecoms industry has seen for many years.
The team, called Cornerstone, was made up of both Vodafone and O2 people and it was their aim to design and share the infrastructure that powers mobile phone networks. That meant pooling people, cell sites and network sharing technology between two competing companies. It wasn’t easy, but over the last twelve months the Cornerstone team have pulled it off.
With over 3,500 activities planned at sites based in 115 UK towns, including Central and Greater London, the team has made sure that both O2 and Vodafone have shared the benefits of building networks together. That means 320 new cell sites have been purchased, 170 have been built and another 100 are already up and running. Not only that, Cornerstone has also expanded the capacity of a range of existing sites within London.
Rob Crutchley, who leads the Cornerstone Team, said: “This project was the right one from the off as each party was clear about its objectives and committed to making it succeed. With the increasing demands being placed on the network, Cornerstone will help O2 create a fantastic customer experience as effectively as it can.”
