Red-rum Cowboys & Aliens hits cinemas this month, and to celebrate, we’re eyeing up the finest steeds, and rootin’ tootin’est cowpokes of all time. Come join us as we rack up the most legendary stallions, both real life and fictional.

Yahoo nanu nanu! To celebrate the launch of Cowboys & Aliens we're talking about our favourite cowboys and aliens. Want to win tickets to a private screening or the UK premiere? Visit our Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/o2uk.

Silver (Fictional)
Hi ho Silver, away! Silver may be a made-up mule, but it’s those stirring words that make the equine star of The Lone Ranger radio and television series the most famous of horses. A revisionist Lone Ranger movie is set to begin filming soon, with Johnny Depp as native American sidekick, Tonto.

Black Beauty (Fictional)
The central character of Anna Sewell’s one and only published work isn’t really the star of the book: instead it’s all the other horses Black Beauty meets as he is passed from owner to owner. It’s also the inspiration for this catchy theme tune. Everybody now…

Red Rum (Real)
Real life racehorses don’t get any greater than Red Rum, the only steed to ever win the Grand National three times, and place second twice more. No other horse has come close to this success: Red Rum was the closest a horse has ever come to a celebrity.

Seabiscuit (Real)
The star of several movies and books, Seabiscuit was not only one of the most successful racehorses in American history, but a legend to many during the Great Depression, overcoming injury, a ridiculous name, and even a film starring Tobey Maguire.

Shadowfax (Fictional)
The fastest horse on Middle Earth, only capable of being ridden by a wizard, Gandalf. You can see director Peter Jackson’s take on Shadowfax in the clip from The Lord Of The Rings below. It’s a bit Bay Watch, isn’t it?
