Happy New Year! As Big Ben tolled to mark the start of 2013, fireworks weren’t the only things hurtling across the sky as texts and calls were sent winging through the ether at the busiest time of year for our network.

In a world where Twitter, Facebook and instant messaging are constantly on the increase, our old acquaintance – the text message, or SMS – was still going on strong, with the number of texts sent across our network increasing by 27% on typical levels throughout 2012.

Across New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day, over 440 million texts were sent across the O2 network – a 10% increase on last year’s New Year celebrations – showing that many of us still prefer to text those we can’t be with, to wish them the best for the year ahead. It seems that, as well as a few sore heads, there may well have been a few achy thumbs on the morning of 1 January 2013.

But that’s not to say that the voice is redundant – over the same period, we saw over 200 million calls carried across the network for those who felt that “OMG HNY LOL” wasn’t quite enough.
