Start your app journey from the right platform
By Lee Hargadon, Head of Enterprise Apps, Telefónica UK
Most of us use apps in our personal lives. They make us more productive and efficient. And they’re doing the same for business. Many organisations have realised the potential of tailored apps.
But as soon as you start developing more than a couple of apps, things get complicated. That’s where development platforms come in. They make creating apps for different operating systems, or linking them to other functionalities like location-based services, simple.
A platform also lets you leverage Android, Windows Phone, BlackBerry and Apple development resources. And ensures a coherent mobile strategy across all your brands and business units.
When to use a platform
We recommend sticking to Gartner’s Rule of Three, which suggests that using a platform makes sense if:
- You have three or more mobile applications or three applications that could be mobilised
- They’re targeted across three or more operating systems or platforms
- They involve the integration of three or more back-end systems
An app is only as good as the strategy behind it
So don’t develop in isolation. Talk to your operational teams to find out where you can help increase business effectiveness. These discussions can drive end-user acceptance and build a rock-solid business case for investment, even in a far-reaching mobile strategy.
