O2 4G network reaches 25% of the UK population
It’s been an extremely busy couple of months here, as we’ve switched on our 4G network in cities and towns across the UK.
We first began our roll-out at the end of August, with the aim of delivering a great 4G experience for our customers as quickly as possible. So we’re really pleased to report that just 9 weeks after launch, our 4G network now reaches over 15 million people in the UK. That’s 11 major cities and over 90 other towns up and down the country, from Paisley to Sevenoaks. 25% indoor population coverage, and we’re only just getting started.
Today we’re also confirming that, following our switch on in Manchester last week, O2 customers will soon be able to get 4G in Edinburgh, Newcastle, Wetherby and Huddersfield, all switching on in the coming weeks.
The arrival of 4G signals a new era for the way we use technology. In the last 12 months customer demand for data in towns and cities has increased by 50-75%. In our first week of launching 4G, data traffic on our network rose to a level that took our 3G service the equivalent of three years to clock-up. The low frequency we’re using for 4G also means customers can receive a good network experience both indoors and outdoors.
But for us it isn’t just about rolling out 4G. Area by area we’re completely modernising our network. We’re investing £1.5m every day on replacing and upgrading equipment to ensure our 2G, 3G and 4G networks are delivering the best experience for our customers.
There’s lots more news to come. We’ll be sharing regular updates on our latest network developments here from now on. Stay tuned for further details.
