5 weird and wonderful pizza toppings

Did you know that 5 September is National Cheese Pizza Day? Of course you did. To celebrate, we’ve served up our top five weird and wonderful pizza toppings from across the globe.

Chocolate Pizza, Nottingham, UK

The diet starts on Monday after this curly swirly chocolate super treat. The Gourmet Chocolate Pizza co. provides more types of chocolate pizza than you knew could even exist, including a Lemon Meringue Chocolate version, Strawberry and Champagne and even a Jelly Bean Jumble Pizza. There is nothing we don’t like about this.

Cicada Pizza, Colombia, South America

If you’re not sure what a cicada is, then maybe skip this bit. These insects are apparently a delicacy in hot countries like Colombia. Dogs, birds and cats love them, so now it’s our turn to see what the fuss is all about. Besides, if they’re on a pizza, how bad can they be?

PB & J Pizza, Goofy’s Kitchen, Disneyland California, USA

If we needed any more proof that Disneyland is the happiest place on earth, then the peanut butter and jelly (jam to us Brits) pizza does the trick. This beauty was found at Goofy’s Kitchen in the Disneyland Resort, California, where the characters walk around and greet you as you eat. Peanut butter pizza AND getting to meet Mickey? Amazing.

Grand Prix: Cookie Crust Pizza, South Korea

We like cookie dough. We like pizza. But would we want to put tomato sauce, cheese, shrimp and potato on a Hobnob? Probably not. Slightly more subtle than the chocolate pizza, but still a rather odd combination of sweet and savoury.

Squid ink pizza, Japan

There are no words other than ‘ew’ to describe the look of this pizza. Known for its sweet-salty taste and tendency to turn your mouth black, squid ink seems like an unnecessary replacement for the traditional herby tomato sauce. If it ain’t broke….
