O2 Media Awards - 'biggest and best yet'
Finalists named after lengthy and heated judging sessions
This year’s O2 Media Awards North West will be the most hotly contested to date.
After more than 100 hours of combined deliberation judges have produced a final shortlist from the hundreds of entries received across 20 media categories.
The Liverpool Echo leads the field with eight nominations but broadcasters ITV Granada and BBC North West Tonight are hot on their heels.
Flying the flag for Cumbria are the Cumberland News, News & Star, North West Evening Mail and Westmorland Gazette who feature in multiple categories.
Lancashire dailies the Lancashire Telegraph and Lancashire Evening Post both have three nominations, while it’s the Chester Chronicle who lead the pack representing Cheshire.
Manchester Evening News’ chief reporter Neal Keeling and photographer Andy Lambert have made it through to the final of their respective categories. Greater Manchester neighbours, the Oldham Evening Chronicle, have three individual nominations including one for managing editor Dave Whaley for Feature Writer of the Year.
With more than 350 individual entries the O2 Awards are the biggest regional press awards in the country. Winners will be announced at the awards ceremony on November 13 at The Imperial War Museum in Manchester. BBC Breakfast presenter Louise Minchin will host the evening’s celebrations.
Judging was conducted over three separate days and the panels were made up of working editors and senior news executives from print, radio and television.
Nicola Green, Director of Communications and Reputation at O2 UK, said the judging panels were hugely impressed by this year’s submissions.
“I know that in every single category the selection of the finalists was a bitterly contested and often heated affair. So many people came so close to being nominated but missed out by the narrowest of margins. The panels wanted me to pass on their thanks and commiserations to all those who didn’t make the final line-up but make these awards so popular. The presentation evening will be a celebration of all that is good about regional media…it’s just a pity that we can’t get everyone who took part in this year’s awards into the room,” added Nicola.
Capita, a UK leader in business process management and outsourcing solutions, will also support the Awards. Last year, O2 extended its existing partnership with Capita to include the running of O2’s call centres across the UK. This included the Customer Service teams in Cheshire and Greater Manchester.
Bob Buiaroski, Capita O2 Partnership Director, said: “We are delighted to sponsor these awards. There’s no better way of celebrating the hugely important work of regional journalists across North West.”
