Five winter breaks to beat the blues
Back to work and already dreaming of a January getaway? Here are five of our favourite spots to escape to after the festive period.
If you’re looking for a cure for the January blues, head to the happiness capital of the world, Copenhagen. Grab a mug of glögg and chill out in one of the city’s cosy bars and cafes. Seek out the wold-famous little mermaid statue and if you’re feeling flush, see if you can get a table at Noma, voted the world’s best restaurant.
As well as being the best place in Europe to take a dip outside in winter (thanks to its world famous geo-thermal springs), the “Queen of the Danube” is also steeped in history, culture and natural beauty. It’s ‘Ruin’ bars are pretty spectacular too, especially Szimpla Kert, the oldest pub in Budapest (pictured above).
Tenerife, The Canary Islands
Need a dose of vitamin D? Less than four hours away is the sun-kissed island of Tenerife where even in January temperatures average around 18°C. Head out past the bars and beaches and you’ll find Mount Teide, Spain’s highest peak and third tallest volcano cone in the world. Well worth a hike. For more family fun, head to Siam Park and Aqualand Costa Adeje – two of the islands biggest water parks.
Cheap food, beer and entertainment will make you eager to make Riga the perfect city break. Voted 2014’s European Capital of Culture, it’s the gem of the Baltics, boasting ancient history and diverse architecture which has made it a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Take a walk around the Old Town and sample the local delicacies at the Central Market.
For the ultimate ‘guess what I did on holiday’ story visit Jokkmokk, Swedish Lapland in February and stay in a fully habitable snowball. Inside you’ll find an insulating reindeer skin and thermal sleeping bag with a polar fleece liner, so you won’t feel the -5C chill outside. Oh, and there’s lots of other cool cultural stuff to do nearby too. Visit the Jokkmokk Winter Market site for details.
