How Twitter supports safety online

Hi I’m Patricia Cartes, global head of online safety outreach at Twitter, and I’d like to share my thoughts on the importance of Safer Internet Day with our friends at O2.

Safer Internet Day was first celebrated in 2004. This year we are joining forces with our safety partners around the world for our most international  Safer Internet Day to date. Together we will promote this year’s call to action: Let’s create a safer internet together.

2014 was a big year for us at Twitter in terms of safety. We launched new user tools, improved our reporting mechanisms and enhanced user controls. We also established a number of partnerships with online safety experts around the world. Online safety continues to be a priority for us. As we face new challenges, the feedback these groups provide us with on a regular basis enables us to build a safer environment for our users.

Our Twitter team is also going to feature in the Safer Internet Day TV program where we will talk about the role we all play to make the internet a safe place. We will share some recommendations on how to stay safe on Twitter as well as join in the young experts and their initiative #Up2US to share a smile this #SID2015. We were very excited to host the recording of the TV show in our @TwitterUK office. Tune in get a sneak peek.

As well as our safety partners, it’s great to see operators like O2 demonstrating real leadership in this space, using their O2 Gurus to educate families on how to keep themselves and their children safe in the digital world.

We are excited for all these international initiatives and to see people from around the world coming together to build a safer internet together.

Let’s create a safer internet together.
