Save the date for Earth Hour this weekend
Earth Hour is back and it’s your chance to help save our planet. So get ready to flick those switches off this Saturday 28 March at 8.30pm.
Hundreds of millions of people across the globe will be switching their lights off for an hour at 8:30pm local time in a symbolic action to raise awareness for our planet.
You can help fight to save the planet by joining us this Earth Hour.
What is Earth Hour?
Earth Hour, organised by the WWF, is a worldwide movement to unite people to protect the planet – turning out the lights and turning off any non-essential electric equipment for an hour on Saturday from 8.30pm (local time).
Over 162 countries took part last year and landmarks across the UK and the world will again power down in support including the OXO Tower, the London Eye and Edinburgh Castle.
For a special surprise, get yourself to the OXO Tower in London at 8.30pm, which is kicking off proceedings with a one-off display and leading the South Bank switch off this Saturday.
Save the date and get involved!
We’ve teamed up with WWF to bring both O2 and non-O2 customers a special Earth Hour text reminder service, so there’s no excuse to miss out this year.
To register for an Earth Hour reminder, customers from all networks can simply text EARTH to 61202*. We’ll remind you an hour before the switch off gets underway!
Our participation in Earth Hour
We’ll again be joining in on the global blackout this year, with our retail stores switching off all non-essential electrical items and we’ll be flicking the switch on our main sites over the weekend.
Thinking Big for people and planet is very important to us, and supporting Earth Hour links in to our Think Big Blue Print objectives. By the end of 2015 we’ve committed to:
- Halve the emissions from our network by 2015, relative to data traffic. (18/40)
- Procure 100% renewable energy for all sites where we control the energy bill. (19/40)
- Have at least one carbon neutral site, achieved through renewable on site generation. (20/40)
- Reduce our absolute carbon emissions in our offices and retail stores by 25%. (21/40)
- Be using 25% less water in our offices and switch sites. (22/40)
