‘Oscars’ of regional journalism will celebrate quality and originality

The ‘Oscars’ of North West regional journalism are back for a ninth consecutive year to celebrate the work of the media across print, television, radio and on-line organisations.

This year the UK’s biggest regional media awards event promises to be even bigger and better – with new categories celebrating diversity and originality.

As in previous years there is no entry fee for journalists to enter the O2 awards. Winners will be announced at a glittering awards and presentation evening in Autumn 2015.

Deadline for entries is Thursday July 16, 2015, with work published or broadcast between August 17, 2014 and June 30, 2015 eligible for the individual and team categories.

This year’s awards are also open to publishers and broadcasters operating within and across the bordering counties of Shropshire, Staffordshire and Flintshire.

This year’s new Website of the Year and On-Line Media Awards will reflect innovation and the skills being employed by writers to reach new audiences. O2 has also introduced an additional Broadcast Team of the Year category to celebrate the work of news teams and production teams working across TV and radio.

The Specialist Publication of the Year category, aimed at producers of niche publications and supplements, returns for another year as does the celebration of emerging talent through the Young Journalist of the Year award.

The search to find the region’s top still photographer has been expanded to include moving pictures in a new Images of the Year category which is open to broadcast camera operators and video journalists as well as press photographers.

A total of 20 categories will recognise the most talented and creative people in the North West media industry across traditional and digital newsrooms through to specialist writers and those making an outstanding contribution to their community.

The O2 Media Awards have the support of ITV and BBC, the Press Association and leading newspaper publishers. Judges are made up of experts from the media industry and include working journalists, editors and publishers.

Previous winners have included Granada Reports, BBC North West Tonight, The Liverpool Echo, Cumberland News, Radio City and Lancashire Life.

The O2 Media Awards North West are part of a series of regional media contests across the North.

Nicola Green, Director of Communications & Reputation at O2, said the awards continued to celebrate the fantastic work of regional journalists in their communities.

“The awards are a memorable part of the local media calendar and the awards presentation evenings never fail to be both uplifting and emotional. We are excitedly looking ahead to another fabulous competition which acknowledges the diversity, quality and passion of regional journalists,” Nicola added.

Capita, a UK leader in business process management and outsourcing solutions, will also support this year’s Awards. As a partner of O2,  Capita manages the running of O2’s call centres across the UK  including Customer Service teams at the Arlington Business Park in Leeds.

Bob Buiaroski, Capita O2 Partnership Director, said: “We are delighted to sponsor these awards. There’s no better way of celebrating the hugely important work of regional journalists across Yorkshire and the Humber.”
