National Women in Engineering Day 2015

By Emma Spillane, Junior Engineer

At O2, we’re proudly supporting National Women in Engineering Day on 23 June 2015. It’s a day of celebrating the brilliant women in our company, inspiring and challenging women across the whole industry, and raising awareness of the many opportunities available for women in the engineering industry.

We have lots planned to support the day both in and out of our offices, including the chance for one of our female employees to do a job swap with our COO Derek McManus.

We’ll also be working with Think Big to reach out to a local school in Windsor, near our head office in Slough, and have an exciting day planned for a group of school girls there. The aim of the day is to inspire these girls, change their perception of engineering and make them aware of all the possibilities that an engineering career holds. We’ve invited passionate female engineers from O2 to speak on the day and the girls will be designing, creating and engineering a digital solution to a problem faced in their local community.

One of the girls will also get the chance to do ‘a day in the life’ work experience session at our head office, to give them a real taste of a career in tech and engineering.

Brendan O’Rourke, CIO at O2, said:

“The role of IT in O2 has changed rapidly over the last few years from purely an operational function to one that enables our business’ success and, as we become a digital business, is challenged to be a differentiator. Half of our IT leadership team and a third of the IT employees are female – this level of gender diversity in an engineering function is exceptional and is a major contributor to the success we have in not only delivering a professional IT capability but differentiating our business by efficient, effective and innovative solutions to business problems.”

Keep an eye out for the world record attempt in London to get the most women engineers in one place on the 23 June. We’ve got a group of our ladies heading down, so if you’re free why not join us?
