- HRH The Prince of Wales will meet leaders from across the business, education and voluntary sectors at start-up academy.
- Only 40% of 10-20 year olds in the UK currently participating in social action.
- Wayra UK has helped 100,000 beneficiaries through investing in social ventures, which have raised £12.5M investment in three years.
London, Tuesday 17 November – Wayra UK, part of Telefonica OpenFuture, a global innovation network, open to partners, will welcome His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales into the academy on Tuesday 24th November, after pledging its support for the #iwill campaign – an initiative aiming to make social action part of life for an additional 1.5 million young people by the year 2020.
#iwill was launched in November 2013 by His Royal Highness with cross-party support from the Prime Minister, Deputy Prime Minister and the Leader of the Opposition. Since then more than 330 organisations have pledged to give practical support, including Wayra UK, which has invested in social action since its inauguration three years ago.
To date, social ventures accelerated by Wayra UK have raised over £12.5M investment. More importantly, there have been over 100,000 beneficiaries from those products and services launched through the programme.
“The ability to make social impact is a great motivator for many of our entrepreneurs,” says Gary Stewart, Director of Wayra UK. “Many of the digital solutions our start-ups have developed have significantly improved the lives of their users, and that is a big part of the reason that Wayra exists.”
Charlotte Hill, Chief Executive of Step up to Serve, the charity behind #iwill, said the support from organisations like Wayra UK was ‘critical’ to increasing social action in 10-20 year olds.
“At present, 40% of 10-20 year olds in the UK are currently involved in social action and we know that many more have an appetite to take part. Alongside this it’s been shown that participation in social enhances employability skills and support from Wayra UK will help link social action specifically to enterprise, an attribute that is increasingly important for young people.”
Joining HRH on the day will be 250+ guest, including Rob Wilson MP, The Minister for Civil Society; Sir Nick Parker, Chair of Step Up To Serve and the #iwill campaign and Ken Olisa, Lord Lieutenant of Greater London.
Other guests are made up of senior leaders from across the business, education and voluntary sectors. The event will also be live streamed and other similar satellite events are running concurrently in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
TV Presenter Susanna Reid and #iwill ambassador Rhammel Afflick will co-host the event, with ex-international rugby player Lawrence Dallaglio OBE meeting some of the young ambassadors who have been supported by the initiative.
The event is invitation only but will broadcast live via Wayra TV from 14:30 (GMT).
