Once upon a time I managed an estate of 5000+ devices.
Back then, Mobility was often synonymous with one solution and that solution was BlackBerry. I remember BlackBerry fondly. It offered a great experience for users and especially for IT Administrators. It was the full package – the device, the operating system, the management software and a secure connection with high grade encryption. Even the President of the United States had one (apparently).
Everything just worked. If an update was approaching, you already had the BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES) service pack to help you through. You had complete control to manage updates at a pace to suit your business. Even the activation process was simple – one email address, one passcode and then sit back, relax, grab a coffee and let it configure itself.
Now I should have lived happily ever after, but then consumerisation of IT happened.
Employees wanted the same range of devices, apps and software they could use at home. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but if you’re not ready then the culture shift can send you down a horrible rabbit hole with no Mad Hatter and certainly no tea party.
Then, just when you think things are becoming more manageable, apps are born. Almost overnight the world spawns an endless army of coders and developers capable of building an app for everything. Some of these found their way into businesses… cue the arrival of Enterprise App Stores, volume purchasing, app management, app triggered VPN on demand, Knox, Android for work the list goes on and on.
Now back to present day and what we now know as Enterprise Mobility Management (EMM). I used to think I would love to go back to having a single solution for all my Mobility needs. But the reality is with so much on offer, and the associated productivity all this new technology brings, there’s no going back and we should be happy about it.
A quick search defines EMM as “the set of people, processes and technology focused on managing mobile devices, wireless networks, and other mobile computing services in a business context.” It may sound complex, but EMM shouldn’t be a nightmare full of surprises around every corner.
