MWC so far (new mobiles!)

Wow, what a past couple of days… Where do we begin?!

It has become tradition for many new mobile announcements to be made the day before Mobile World Congress begins and this year has been no exception. In no particular order, here goes…

Sony XA1, XA1 Ultra & XZ Premium

This morning Sony announced several new phones, and they’re all fantastic. One of the highlights of the XZ Premium is its gorgeous 5.5” 4K display with HDR. Without the geek speak, that’s a sharper, brighter and more true-to-life image than anything you’ll have seen before. The second highlight comes in the camera department – the rear camera is what Sony calls a ‘Motion Eye’ camera. With it, you can record HD video in 960fps which will give you some of the most incredible slow motion videos you ever thought possible on a mobile phone.

Visually, the XA1 & XA1 Ultra are virtually identical but there are some crucial differences. The XA1 has a 5” HD display which has no borders on it’s side. On the XA1 Ultra however, the screen size is increased to a massive 6” Full HD. It also has a dedicated front-facing flash for some fantastic selfies.

LG were one of the first to announce a new device at MWC. Building upon the success of the G5 last year, LG have put their best display yet into a smartphone. A 5.7” display with super thin bezels, HDR and Dolby Vision… What does that mean? It means your photos and videos will look amazing with colours almost leaping out at you. LG have also kept their wide angle camera tech on the phone from the G5 with some improvements such as a higher resolution – so images will look even sharper. What’s great about the wide angle functionality is that you can capture more in your photo than with a standard camera… Great for those photos at gigs!

Also, LG fans, the new G6 is water resistant with an IP68 rating. Now that’s something to sing (in the rain) about!

Huawei P10

We were also in attendance for the Huawei announcement of the fantastic new P10. With a lens co-engineered by legendary camera maker ‘Leica’ with the option of applying a bokeh effect, Huawei’s ambition is clear – to show the smartphone world who’s boss when it comes to photography. Also boasting facial recognition, professional background lighting effects, an anti-glare coating on the lenses (less reflections), optical image stabilisation, and 2x hybrid zoom – and loads more camera features – this is one serious phone for those keen on smartphone photography.

Not into photography? No problem – everything about this phone oozes style and substance, and it has the oomph under the hood to get everything you need, done. Fast.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 3, Galaxy Book & VR 2017

MWC has typically been a platform for Samsung to announce its latest new phone but this year it was all about their tablets and new VR headset. The Samsung Tab 3 builds upon what made the Tab 2 great, and made it even better. Improvements have been made to the design, with an all-new glass back, HDR video capabilities, higher resolution back & front cameras (13MP & 5MP vs 8MP & 1.2MP), faster performance, a higher capacity battery with fast charging and a 4-speaker setup, for stunning sound quality and clarity. Included with the new Tab 3 is a new and improved S-Pen – it delivers an even more true-to-life writing, painting & drawing experience than ever before.

Also announced was the new Galaxy Book – think of it as a very powerful computer, but in the convenience and portability of a tablet. As Samsung themselves say, tablets aren’t just for people on the move; there’s more and more of us using one in the home and with the Galaxy Book, you’ll be able to forget about home PC’s for good.

Towards the end of the event, Samsung had two more surprises – one was a new Gear VR for 2017, complete with a new controller to give more functionality at your fingertips. Their last surprise was a tease but rather than talk about it, check it out for yourself here:

You may never have heard of HMD Global before, but they will forever be known as the company that brought Nokia back to the fold – and we’re glad they have, because things have never quite seemed right without them. With Nokia’s triumphant return, it brings with it both the new and the nostalgic. Bringing in the new is the Nokia 6, 5 & 3. The Nokia 6 is the biggest & best of the three, featuring a 5.5” Full HD display, a micro SD slot, 16MP back & 8MP front cameras & Dolby Atmos audio, this new phone carries a lot of punch.

For the nostalgic out there, HMD Global have also revived the Nokia 3310 – but with a twist. The new 3310 remains faithful to the original but brings with it a number of improvements such as a better battery (not like the original didn’t last nearly 2 weeks on a charge or anything… which it did!), micro USB charging, a 2MP camera and a colour screen. And yes… It has ‘Snake’ built-in – it wouldn’t be a 3310 without it, after all.

When? Where? How much?

These devices are still very new and have only just been announced and as yet we have no details on any of these devices – if they’ll be on O2, colours, costs etc. Please do keep an eye on our Social Media feeds (links below) as that’ll be the first place we’ll share any news or updates.
