O2 brings the Galaxy to London skies

  • Unique installation unveiled in London transforms a blank canvas into a beautiful starry sky at night
  • O2 uses STARPATH to create a world-first virtual sky of stars to celebrate the launch of the Samsung Galaxy S5 on O2 Refresh
  • Campaign is supported by the launch of a new interactive game at www.o2galaxy.co.uk

The world’s first UV-powered, virtual ‘galaxy’ was unveiled to dazzled Londoners in Clapham Common. The unique installation, created by O2 to celebrate the launch of the new Samsung Galaxy S5 on O2 Refresh, looks like a blank canvas by day but at night is revealed to be a beautiful depiction of a starry sky.

The 8×5 metre installation, on tour now, lights up to invite passers-by to visit www.o2galaxy.co.uk. The unique website leads to an interactive game giving people the chance to win a Samsung Galaxy S5 on O2, as well offering the opportunity to find out more about the phone and how to order. To win, visitors must explore an entirely immersive 360 degree vista of the Milky Way galaxy, searching for famous stars and hidden content.

“We love exploring new ways of using technology to deliver unique experiences for our customers,” said Nina Bibby, Marketing and Consumer Director at O2. “STARPATH is a cutting edge technology that justly showcases Samsung’s fantastic flagship phone, available now on O2 Refresh. We were inspired by the eco-friendly use of bioluminescent materials to amaze passers-by and invite them to find out more about a different kind of Galaxy.”

The Samsung Galaxy S5, available now, combines an advanced camera, fast network connectivity, dedicated fitness tools and enhanced device protection features allowing consumers to stay fit and connected in style. It is available in O2 stores and online from £48 per month on O2 Refresh with no upfront cost.

O2’s future-proof O2 Refresh tariff works by splitting the amount a customer pays for their phone and the amount they pay for their minutes, texts and data, giving complete transparency and control of their monthly spend. As such, O2 Refresh makes it cheaper to either upgrade early by paying simply what is owed on the phone. Customers who keep their phone for longer than 24 months will also pay less as, once the phone is paid off, only the cost of minutes, texts and data remain.

STARPATH bioluminescence technology

Eight out of ten people in the UK (83%)[1] have their home view of the night sky affected by light pollution. O2’s galaxy has been made from STARPATH – a liquid combining UV crystals and Photo-luminescent materials to create a night time glow. The elastomeric membrane can be sprayed onto a solid surface to make it glow in the dark, and in this case bring the stars to the capital city.

O2 is the first brand to work with STARPATH.
