O2 announces that, from today, Pay Monthly customers can now upgrade to a new tariff and the latest handset when they choose to. ‘Fast Track Upgrade’ allows a customer of three months or more to upgrade for a one-off charge, of which O2 will pay 20%.

This latest move, in-line with O2’s ‘Thinking of You’ promise, is the result of customers wanting the ability to upgrade mid-contract without paying the full amount. For the first time in the UK, customers on O2 have the flexibility to choose when they upgrade, regardless of their contract or existing handset.

Gary Booker, General Manager – Consumer at O2 said: ‘Our customers tell us they want the flexibility to upgrade when that must-have phone has been announced, and now we’ve given them that.’

‘Our priority has always been around flexibility and value for money. When you combine Fast Track Upgrade with O2 Recycle, where our customers can get up to £260 for their existing phone, then I believe we are offering both.’

To upgrade early, customers can pay their normal monthly tariff charge multiplied by each complete month remaining of their minimum term contract, less 20% (that O2 chips in) and then less the VAT. They can also get up to £260 for their old phone by trading it in with O2 Recycle www.o2recycle.co.uk.

The ability to ‘Fast Track Upgrade’ is available in O2 Shops and Customer Service for both Pay Monthly and Business customers and also in Carphone Warehouse, Phones 4U and Apple stores / online. The full terms and who’s eligible can be found at o2.co.uk/terms.

Customer example:

A customer with an iPhone 3GS on an 18 month, £31 300 minute tariff ‘ is 12 months into their contract and chooses the ‘Fast Track Upgrade’. Their charge is calculated as follows:-

£31 x 6 (months remaining) = £186

£186 – 20% – VAT =

‘Fast Track Upgrade charge = £119.04
