O2 switches on superfast 4G in 500th UK town

• Ipswich is the latest beneficiary of O2’s £3 billion upgrade plan
• O2 4G coverage reaches 70% outdoor population coverage
• Ipswich customers now using O2 4G at no extra cost

O2 today announces that O2 4G has come to Ipswich, meaning O2 customers can now surf, stream and shop on their phones faster than ever before. O2 customers using 4G devices in the Ipswich area have already been moved onto 4G tariffs, at no extra charge, meaning they’ll be ready to get all the benefits of O2’s superfast 4G straight away.

Ipswich’s activation on is just part of O2’s five-year upgrade plan. O2 is investing £3 billion to roll out 4G across the country in its fastest roll-out ever while also modernising its existing 2G and 3G networks.

Digital Economy Minister Ed Vaizey said: “I congratulate O2 on this achievement as it moves towards its commitment of providing 4G coverage to 98 per cent of the population by the end of 2017. O2’s 4G network now reaches 70 per cent of the UK population across 500 towns and cities. It’s investments like this, combined with the Government’s rollout of superfast broadband, that will ensure the benefits of the digital economy reach consumers and businesses across the UK.”

Customers in Ipswich join millions of others across the country who can benefit from O2’s 4G network. With 4G available on both Pay & Go and Pay Monthly tariffs and data allowances offering between 500MB and 20GB data per month with up to unlimited minutes and texts, there’s an O2 tariff for everyone. O2 also offers a wide range of tools and assistance for its 4G customers including 4G coverage checkers, data calculators and O2 Gurus available in store and online.

Derek McManus, Chief Operating Officer, O2, said “This is a significant step in bringing 4G to our customers and is our fastest ever roll-out of new mobile technology. At the same time, we’ve been transforming the core part of our network to introduce new features to enhance our customer’s experience such as HD Voice which brings higher and clearer quality sound to calls. We’re also getting ready to launch new capabilities like voice and video calls over 4G in the coming months.”

O2 launched its 4G service in August 2013 and now covers 500 towns and cities reaching 70% outdoor population coverage. O2 is continuing with its rapid network roll out with the aim of reaching 98% of the UK population before the end of 2017.
